Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

Amelia Earhart's Solo Atlantic Flight (1932)

harbour-grace · The Baccalieu Trail

Earhart's history-making solo flight began at a Conception Bay airfield and a hotel dinner of tomato juice and soup.

On 20 May 1932 Amelia Earhart landed at Harbour Grace at 2 pm and departed at 7:20 pm in a Lockheed Vega. En route she battled an exhaust-manifold fire, altimeter failure, and icing, landing in Culmore pasture near Londonderry, Northern Ireland, 14 hours 56 minutes after departure - the first woman to fly the Atlantic solo. Honours included the Hoover Gold Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Legion of Honour. While in Harbour Grace she stayed at the Cochrane Hotel, where Rose Archibald served her tomato juice and soup.

How to get there

Harbour Grace, Conception Bay: the Conception Bay Museum on the waterfront holds the Earhart exhibit in the town she quietly slipped out of in 1932.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
