Brimstone Head
fogo-island · The Kittiwake Coast
A slab of ancient rock over the sea - and, by one account, a corner of the flat Earth.
Brimstone Head is a 145 m headland of Precambrian rock at Fogo Island's western edge, rising sheer over the community of Fogo. A short, steep trail takes hikers to the crest for panoramic views of icebergs, whales and the Newfoundland coast. The Flat Earth Society of Canada long ago singled out Brimstone Head as one of the four corners of a flat Earth - a claim Tourism NL happily retells, though no geologist has ever agreed.
The story they tell
The Flat Earth Society held that the Earth is a disc and that Brimstone Head is one of its four corners; locals will direct you to the corner with a straight face.
How to get there
Signposted trailhead near the ferry dock at Fogo; 20 minutes up the headland on the island's western edge for views of icebergs, whales and the coast.
Mind yourself
The trail is short and steep with sheer drops at the crest — wear real footwear and keep back from the edge.
