John Cabot's 1497 Landfall
The Bonavista Peninsula
Cabot reached North America in 1497 - where exactly, no log survives to say.
Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), sailing from Bristol under English commission, reached the coast of North America in 1497, a voyage that underpins England's later claims to the region. The exact landfall is not documented: no contemporary log survives, and historians have proposed sites from southern Labrador to Maine. Bonavista holds the traditional claim - it appears in later retellings and was nationally celebrated in 1997 when the replica Matthew sailed from Bristol to Bonavista for the quincentenary.
The story they tell
Local tradition holds that Cabot stepped ashore at Cape Bonavista and cried 'O Buon Vista!' - the beautiful sight - naming the cape on the spot; a fine story, though the words belong to legend, not the record.
How to get there
The claim is commemorated at Cape Bonavista with the Matthew replica (in season) and the lighthouse — enjoy the story and know the scholars are still arguing.
