Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

Change Islands

change-islands · The Kittiwake Coast

A tickle of an outport that time slid past — stages and stores on three islands, reached by the same ferry that serves Fogo.

The Change Islands, between Notre Dame Bay and the Labrador Sea off the island's northeast coast, are an outport community of about 150 people spread over three small islands, two populated, separated by narrow straits called tickles — the North Tickle and the Main Tickle. First settled in the early 1700s as scattered seasonal fishing stations, the community peaked in the early 1900s as the hub of the schooner fleet working the Labrador fishery. Residents have kept their traditional homes, stages and stores — landmarks that vanished from much of coastal Newfoundland with the collapse of the ground fishery — and the islands promote hiking, kayaking and 'the preservation of the past'. The provincial ferry from Farewell also services Fogo Island to the east (Town of Change Islands).

How to get there

Provincial ferry from the Farewell terminal off the Trans-Canada near Gander: about 25 minutes to Change Islands, with the same run continuing to Fogo Island (about 50 minutes). Vehicles for Change Islands load first — arrive early, and check the schedule before you commit.

The kitchen

Well, Sunday the pot was on before Mass and the smell of it met you at the gate. Here's what was in it, and how it's done.

The hall

Them days the hall had a dance Saturday and the kitchen had music the rest of the week. It's still playing. Come in and listen.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
