The Dungeon, Bonavista
bonavista · The Bonavista Peninsula
A collapsed sea cave with two openings to the ocean — a blow-hole crater you view from the edge of the cliff.
The Dungeon, at the very tip of the Bonavista Peninsula within minutes of the town of Bonavista, is a day-use provincial park around a massive heart-shaped crater with two separate openings to the sea. Atlantic waves carved the sedimentary rock over roughly ten thousand years into two sea caves whose roofs collapsed, leaving a natural archway the park describes as a blow-hole, or gloup, that will itself collapse into a sea stack in time. It is a designated geosite of the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark, reached by a dirt road passing green fields, with parking, a viewing area and cell service; camping and campfires are prohibited (Parks NL).
How to get there
At the very tip of the Bonavista Peninsula, minutes from the town of Bonavista: follow the dirt road past the green fields — parking, the viewing area and cell service are at the site.
Mind yourself
Stay safely back from the edge — the park's own page warns the crashing waves below are a reminder to keep clear of the rim; keep dogs leashed.
