Ferryland Lighthouse
ferryland · The Irish Loop
Walk a headland road out to an 1870 lighthouse and eat a pre-ordered picnic looking straight down the Atlantic.
The Ferryland Lighthouse, built in 1870, stands on the rocky headland at Ferryland on the Irish Loop. Lighthouse Picnics operates the tower's catered picnic experience: meals are ordered online in advance (ordering closes at midnight the night before, or when the day is fully booked), collected at the lighthouse and eaten on the headland. The light sits about 2 km — a 30-40 minute walk — from the start of Lighthouse Road, which turns off by the Colony of Avalon interpretation centre past the Southern Shore Folk Arts Centre; there is no parking at the lighthouse itself, and an independent hop-on shuttle runs during operating hours. Picnics are weather-dependent — rain and wind can stop delivery to the light.
How to get there
Ferryland is about an hour / 80 km south of St. John's on Route 10: turn off by the Colony of Avalon interpretation centre onto Lighthouse Road, on the right past the Southern Shore Folk Arts Centre — the tower is about 2 km (30-40 minutes on foot) from the road's start, with no parking at the light itself.
