Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

Gander: Crossroads of the World

gander · The Trans-Canada

The town that grew beside the biggest airport on Earth in 1938.

Construction of the airport at Gander began in 1936 with a crew of 900 by the end of 1937, and the first plane landed on 11 January 1938; with four paved runways it was the largest airport in the world at the time. In the Second World War Gander was the main staging point for the movement of Allied aircraft to Europe, and postwar it became the technical stop for transatlantic civil aviation, handling thousands of flights annually. The town grew up around the airport, styled the 'Crossroads of the World', and its history is told by the Gander Airport Authority and the North Atlantic Aviation Museum.

How to get there

Gander on the Trans-Canada: the North Atlantic Aviation Museum is on the highway, and the airport's retro 1959 international lounge is worth the detour.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
