Trivia

The Board

Them days you sent a youngster up the road to say there was a game on. Now you send the code, and if a chair's still empty when you deal, one of the regulars takes it.

Down the road

Well, Sunday after Mass we'd walk it. Start at the gate and go down, and every house along here I'll tell you who's in it.

Petty Harbour and the Mini Aquarium

petty-harbour · The Irish Loop

A fishing community with a catch-and-release aquarium that empties itself back into the sea every fall.

Petty Harbour sits on the east side of the Avalon, and its Mini Aquarium at 35A Southside Road operates in the Petty Harbour Fishermen's Cooperative building on the south side of the harbour. It is Newfoundland's first seasonal, catch-and-release aquarium: all animals are collected locally and returned to the ocean in the fall. Touch tanks hold sea stars, crabs, anemones, and more, alongside interactive exhibits, an ocean science lab, and a virtual-reality experience. It is a non-profit open roughly 6 June to 1 September; adult admission is $9.99, youth $6.99, family $29.99, under-3 free, and the site is wheelchair accessible.

How to get there

Petty Harbour on the east side of the Avalon, about 20 minutes from St. John's on Route 11's shore road; the Mini Aquarium is at 35A Southside Road in the fishermen's co-op building on the south side of the harbour.

Fact

Where that comes from

On the go

Them days the garden party was the whole summer. Here's what's on the go now, and when.

The kitchen

Well, Sunday the pot was on before Mass and the smell of it met you at the gate. Here's what was in it, and how it's done.

The hall

Them days the hall had a dance Saturday and the kitchen had music the rest of the week. It's still playing. Come in and listen.

The yarns

He said, you know the one about the light on the water. I said, I do. That's a story, mind, and I'll tell you which parts.

Not the house

No, I said, that's not the house. It was down just below there. Go back up the road.
