Quidi Vidi is a small fishing village tucked into a narrow gut on the northeast edge of St. John's, separated from the main city by Signal Hill and the surrounding hills. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited European settlements in North America and retains the character of a traditional outport despite being physically within the boundaries of a capital city. The village consists of a small working harbour, colourful weathered wooden fishing stages and houses clinging to the hillside, and a narrow road that winds along the waterfront. Quidi Vidi Lake, directly adjacent to the village, is the site of the Royal St. John's Regatta — North America's oldest continuous sporting event, held annually on the first Wednesday in August since 1826. The regatta features fixed-seat rowing races on the lake and draws crowds of 40,000 to 50,000 people, functioning as an unofficial civic holiday in St. John's. Quidi Vidi Brewing Company, established in the brewery building overlooking the lake in 1996, produces Iceberg Beer and a range of craft ales and has become a popular destination in its own right. The combination of the village, the brewery, the lake, and the proximity to Signal Hill makes Quidi Vidi one of the most visited and photographed areas in St. John's. Artists have been drawn to Quidi Vidi for generations, and several galleries and studios operate in the village. It represents St. John's in miniature — historic, colourful, salt-soaked, and fiercely itself.
