A UNESCO site where Basque whalers rendered whale oil 500 years ago.
Red Bay on Labrador's Strait of Belle Isle coast was the centre of industrial whaling in the Western Hemisphere in the 1500s: Basque mariners from France and Spain operated at 'Gran Baya' from the 1530s, rendering whale oil for the lamps of Europe until whale stocks collapsed after some 70 years. The site preserves rendering ovens, cooperages, wharves, a cemetery, and the underwater remains of several vessels, including the galleon San Juan, lost in the harbour in 1565. Red Bay was inscribed by UNESCO in 2013 under criteria (iii) and (iv) as the earliest, most complete and best-preserved testimony of the European whaling tradition.
How to get there
Red Bay on the Strait of Belle Isle (Route 510): Parks Canada's interpretation centre sits above the harbour, with the boat to Saddle Island's wreck site, tryworks and cemetery in season.
