The Royal St. John's Regatta
North America's oldest organized sporting event - and the world's largest garden party.
The first organized rowing event on Quidi Vidi Lake was held 12 August 1816, and the Regatta's anniversary is dated from 22 September 1818, marking George III's coronation. It is the oldest organized sporting event in North America. Held the first Wednesday of August, it draws up to 50,000 people and bills itself as the Largest Garden Party in the World - the city effectively stops working for the day. Modern sliding-seat rowing arrived in 1966.
